Black Friday sheets: how to read the discount

October 21, 2026|Edoardo Guarise|7 min read

On Black Friday a sheet discount is only real if it is calculated on the lowest price charged in the 30 days before, as the European pricing rule requires since 2022. Then composition, thread density, fabric certificate and mattress size count: a low price on the wrong item is still money wasted. Below, the checks in order.

When Black Friday falls in 2026

Black Friday is the Friday after American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November, so Black Friday is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday Monday 30 November. Many shops open their promotions days beforehand and close them after the weekend, so the real window runs from the third week of November to early December.

For bed linen the timing makes sense: it comes before winter, when you change the duvet cover and renew worn-out sheets, and before Christmas.

The real discount and the 30-day rule

Since 28 May 2022, anyone announcing a price reduction in the European Union must state the previous price, that is, the lowest one applied in the 30 days before the discount (source: European Commission, price indication directive, Article 6a). In Italy the rule is in Article 17 bis of the Consumer Code, introduced by Legislative Decree 26 of 2023. The Court of Justice of the EU clarified in its ruling of 26 September 2024, case C-330/23, that the discount percentage too must be calculated on that price, and not on a higher list price.

The trick this rule aims to stop is well known: raise the price at the start of November and then "discount" it at the end of the month. To protect yourself, two steps are enough.

  • Save today's price of the items you're interested in, with a photo of the page or a bookmark with the date
  • On Black Friday, compare the discounted price with the saved one, not with the crossed-out price

If the crossed-out price is higher than the one you saw at the start of the month, the declared discount is inflated. If the final price is the same as in October, there is no discount.

What to read on the label

The discount tells you how much you save, the label tells you what you are buying. Three items count more than the others.

Composition. "Bamboo" on a textile label almost always means viscose made from bamboo cellulose, and the percentage must be read in full: a blend with polyester costs less to produce and absorbs less moisture. Bamboo viscose holds around 13% of its own weight in moisture, against 8.5% for cotton (source: ASTM D1909). How to tell real viscose from a blend is explained in the guide on how to recognise genuine bamboo viscose.

Thread density. The number of threads per square inch, shown as TC, is only useful when comparing identical fabrics. A cheap 1000TC cotton is often made with multi-ply threads, and the number goes up without the sheet getting any better. The guide on what the thread count really says explains the thresholds.

Certificate. A fabric certification can be verified with its number in the body's public register (source: OEKO-TEX, Label Check). If the number is missing, the claim cannot be checked. What class I certification does and does not guarantee is in the guide on what OEKO-TEX certification means.

The right size before the basket

On Black Friday people buy in a hurry, and the wrong size is the most expensive mistake: the fitted sheet must be chosen by the width and depth of the mattress, not by the bed frame. The catalogue matches are these:

Bed Mattress and fitted sheet Flat sheet Duvet cover
Single 90x200 160x290 155x200
Three-quarter 120x200 190x290 200x200
Double 160x200 260x290 255x200
King size 180x200 260x290 260x240

Before opening the basket, it is worth measuring the mattress height with topper and mattress protector included: the sheet corners in the catalogue are 30 cm deep (source: product page). Less common sizes, from the French bed to maxi, are in the guide to double sheet sizes.

Buying the full set

November promotions push sets, and the comparison is made by adding up the pieces. In the Looniva catalogue the Set Falce double, with fitted sheet and pair of pillowcases, costs €99 against €108 for the same pieces bought separately, 8% less at list price (source: product page). The Mezzaluna set costs €169 in double size, and the Plenilunio set, with duvet cover, €249.

A set makes sense for anyone renewing the whole bed in the same colour. Those who already have a duvet cover in good condition, or who want two fitted sheets to alternate between washes, spend less buying pieces separately. The cases are laid out in the guide on full bed set or separate pieces.

An extra set has a practical advantage: with two sets in rotation, each one gets washed half as often, and viscose wants 30°C on the delicate cycle, as explained in the guide on how to wash bamboo sheets without ruining them.

Returns and withdrawal on promotional purchases

For online purchases in the European Union, the right of withdrawal applies: 14 days from delivery to return the product without giving a reason. Return shipping costs are borne by the buyer, unless the seller offers to pay them or did not state them before the purchase (source: Your Europe, right of withdrawal).

Many shops offer returns longer than 14 days, but often exclude promotional items. Before buying, open the returns policy and look for the word "promo" or "sale". For sheets the withdrawal right only applies if the item has not been used: trying them on the bed for a night usually means losing it.

If the sheets are a Christmas gift

A purchase made on 27 November and delivered at the start of December has its withdrawal period expire in mid-December, before the gift is opened. If the recipient has a bed of a different size, an exchange at Christmas is no longer guaranteed.

The solutions are two: ask for the mattress size first, or give a gift card to spend. The Looniva gift card ranges from €50 to €200 and arrives by email, so the recipient chooses the size. Other ideas divided by price bracket are in the guide to Christmas gifts under €100.

In summary

  • In 2026 Black Friday is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday Monday 30 November
  • A discount is measured against the lowest price of the previous 30 days (source: EU price indication directive, Article 6a)
  • Composition, thread density and certificate number matter more than the discount percentage
  • The fitted sheet is chosen by the width and depth of the mattress, topper included
  • Online withdrawal lasts 14 days from delivery and applies to unused items (source: Your Europe)

Frequently asked questions

When is Black Friday 2026?

Friday 27 November 2026, the day after American Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday falls on Monday 30 November. Many online shops bring their promotions forward to the week before and extend them into early December.

How can you tell if a sheet discount is real?

The starting price of the discount must be the lowest charged in the previous 30 days, as the European rule in force since 2022 requires. Saving the price at the start of November and comparing it with the Black Friday price is the simplest way to check.

Is it worth buying sheets on offer?

It is, when the discount is calculated on the real price and the item is the right one: full declared composition, a verifiable certificate with its number, and mattress size checked before ordering. Bed linen on offer that doesn't fit the mattress is still wasted money.

How much do Looniva sheets and sets cost at list price?

At list price the Looniva fitted sheet costs from €49 to €79, the pair of 50x75 pillowcases €39, and sets from €79 (Set Falce single) to €269 (Plenilunio king size). Shipping in Italy costs €5.90, free over €109, and returns within 30 days apply to unused items at full price.
