In our ranking the best double duvet cover is the Looniva one in 300TC bamboo viscose: smooth to the touch, it handles night-time moisture well and closes with a hidden zip. It costs €89 in 200x200 and €99 in 255x200. If you want to spend less or wash often at 60°C, look at cotton satin or cotton percale. Before choosing the fabric, measure your duvet: the right size comes from there.
I Looniva double duvet covers are in 300TC bamboo viscose, in 8 colours and 4 sizes.
The double duvet cover ranking
We have lined up six fabrics, the ones you actually find in shops when you look for a duvet cover for a double bed. The score runs from 1 to 10 and comes from the weighted average of the five criteria explained below.
| Rank. | Fabric | Best for | Strength | Limit | Double price | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Looniva, 300TC bamboo viscose | those who sleep warm and want a smooth fabric | silky feel, moisture managed, hidden zip | wash at 30°C, no tumble dryer | €89 (200x200), €99 (255x200) | 8,7 |
| 2 | Cotton satin | those who want a shiny, soft fabric | smooth surface, withstands hot washes | in summer it keeps you warmer | n.d. | 7,8 |
| 3 | Cotton percale | those who like it cool and matt and wash often | sturdy, washable at 60°C | rougher, creases | from about €44 to €60 | 7,7 |
| 4 | Microfibre | the guest bed, minimal budget | price, dries quickly | holds little moisture | from about €12 | 6,7 |
| 5 | Linen | ventilated rooms, those who like a worn-in look | air flow | rough in the first washes, heavy | n.d. | 6,6 |
| 6 | Flannel | only in winter in cold houses | warm on first contact | in summer it gets put away | n.d. | 6,5 |
Looniva is our brand: this ranking is our judgement, with the criteria and weights written below. The prices for percale and microfibre were recorded on 21 October 2026 on the products in the Qualescegliere duvet cover ranking (Amazon prices of the day). Where there was no product to compare, we wrote n/a, so as not to invent a price bracket.
In summary
- The Looniva duvet cover in 300TC bamboo viscose ranks first with 8.7 out of 10, ahead of cotton satin (7.8)
- Viscose holds around 13% of its weight in moisture (ASTM D1909), and polyester microfibre 0.4% (Journal of Natural Fibers, 2025)
- For a 250x200 double duvet, the size that fits well is 255x200
- Cotton is washed at higher temperatures; bamboo viscose goes at 30°C, on a delicate cycle, without fabric softener
How we evaluated
Each fabric receives a score from 1 to 10 on five criteria. The final score is the sum of the scores multiplied by their weight. Comfort carries the most weight, because the duvet cover is the part of the bed you touch most, on your chest and arms, all night long.
| Criterion | Weight | What we look at |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort to the touch | 25% | smoothness, softness, weight of the fabric on the body |
| Moisture management | 20% | how much moisture the fibre holds without feeling wet to the touch |
| Size and closure | 20% | sizes available for double beds, type of closure |
| Care and washing | 15% | washing temperature, drying, ironing |
| Price | 20% | how much the double size costs |
For our duvet cover the sum is this: comfort 10, moisture 9, size and closure 9, care 8, price 7. Multiplied by the weights, that gives 8.7. Price gets the lowest score, and that is fair: a cotton duvet cover costs about half as much. A high score means the fabric performs well on these five criteria; a bed with different needs (60°C washes, for example) may have a different winner.
Which fabric to choose for the duvet cover?
Choose based on what bothers you at night. If you wake up hot or sweaty, look at the fibre; if you dislike the rough feel, look at the weave.
Bamboo viscose is an artificial fibre of plant origin, made from cellulose (Treccani, viscosa). To the touch it is the smoothest of the group after silk, and the reason we put it first is moisture: it holds around 13% of its own weight (ASTM D1909). Under a goose down duvet, which already gives off a lot of warmth, this matters more than it does on sheets, because little air circulates between you and the duvet.
Cotton satin is the choice for those who want a glossy surface without moving to silk. It feels as smooth as viscose on first contact, then retains a bit more heat. Percale is plain-weave cotton, matt and cool, and its strength is resilience: you can wash it at 60°C for years. Linen, which is the most breathable fabric of all, carries one reservation for us: on a duvet cover its weight is noticeable, and in the first ten washes the feel stays rough. Those who love it know this and want it that way. For the full comparison between the two fibres, there is the guide on bamboo or linen.
Microfibre is polyester: it costs little and dries in an hour, but holds 0.4% moisture (Journal of Natural Fibers, 2025), and those who sleep warm feel it around three in the morning. Pros and cons are in the guide on microfibre.
What size is needed for a double bed?
The duvet cover size is chosen by the duvet. Many double duvets measure 250x200: for those you need a 255x200 duvet cover, which leaves a few centimetres of room and lets the duvet puff up. A duvet cover that is too narrow squashes the feathers; one that is too wide lets the duvet slide into a corner.
| Duvet cover | For which duvet | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 155x200 | single, narrow three-quarter | €79 |
| 200x200 | square 200 duvet, French beds | €89 |
| 255x200 | classic double, 250 duvet | €99 |
| 260x240 | King size, long 240 duvets | €109 |
An example with numbers. You have a duvet that measures 248 cm wide and 198 long (the labels say 250x200, but a tape measure always shows a little less). Duvet cover width minus duvet width: 255 minus 248 is 7 cm, that is 3.5 cm per side. Length: 200 minus 198 is 2 cm. That is the right margin. Redo the sum with your duvet's measurements: if the margin exceeds 15 cm per side, go down one size. For the 200x200 case there is a dedicated guide to the 200x200 size, and all the others are in the duvet cover size guide.
Zip, buttons or flap?
The most common closure in Italian shops is the flap, a fold of fabric that holds the duvet in place without buttons. It works, but the duvet slips out from the bottom if you move a lot. Buttons hold better and get lost in the washing machine. The zip is the most stable closure: the Looniva duvet cover has a hidden zip on the short side, covered by a fold of fabric, so you don't feel it on your feet.
Can it be used all year round?
The duvet cover yes, the duvet depends. In winter you use it with a heavy duvet; from May to September you can put in a light duvet of 100 or 150 grams per square metre, or keep it aside and sleep with just the top sheet. Viscose stays pleasant even in June, flannel doesn't: this is why flannel comes last in our ranking, even though it is the warmest fabric on first contact. On when to switch from duvet to quilt, there is the guide duvet cover or quilt.
How much does a double duvet cover cost?
It depends almost entirely on the fibre. In the 21 October 2026 survey of the Qualescegliere ranking, a double microfibre duvet cover started at around €12 and a cotton one stood between €44 and €60. Ours costs €99 in the 255x200 size and €89 in 200x200.
It is worth doing the sums on rotation. With only one duvet cover, on wash day the duvet is left bare or the bed stays unmade until evening. With two, you wash one and put the other on. Two 255x200 duvet covers come to €198, above the €109 threshold for free shipping in Italy. If you need the whole bed, the Plenilunio set combines duvet cover, sheets and pillowcases.
How do you wash it without ruining it?
Machine wash at 30°C, delicate cycle, liquid detergent, no bleach and no fabric softener. Turn it inside out and close the zip before putting it in the drum: open teeth catch on the rest of the laundry. Dry it flat, never in a tumble dryer, and take it off the line while it is still slightly damp: it smooths itself out once it is back on the duvet. The detail of each step is in the guide on how to wash bamboo bed linen.
Our duvet covers are certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 class I, the class with the strictest limits on harmful substances. What that label means is explained in the guide on OEKO-TEX certification.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best fabric for a double duvet cover?
For us, bamboo viscose, because it combines the smoothest surface after silk with good moisture management, and under a warm duvet it is the quality you notice most. If you wash often at high temperatures, cotton percale remains the most practical choice.
What is the difference between 250x200 and 255x200?
The 250x200 is usually the duvet size, the 255x200 is the duvet cover size that dresses it. The extra five centimetres let you slip the duvet in without squashing it and leave it puffed up. Always measure your duvet with a tape measure: labels round up.
How much is the Looniva double duvet cover?
The Looniva duvet cover costs €99 in the 255x200 size and €89 in 200x200, in 8 colours. Shipping in Italy is free over €109, and returns are possible within 30 days for unused items.
How often should you wash the duvet cover?
Once every one or two weeks, together with the sheets, is the rhythm that keeps the bed fresh. In summer, if you sweat at night, it's best to shorten the intervals. The duvet inside gets washed much less often, once or twice a year, following the label.
