In our ranking, the best three-quarter sheets are Looniva's in 300TC bamboo viscose: smooth, they handle moisture well and have 30 cm deep corners. The 120x200 fitted sheet costs €59, the 190x290 flat sheet €69, the Mezzaluna set €149. If you wash often at 60°C, look at percale. Before the fabric, though, grab a tape measure and measure your mattress.
The Looniva three-quarter sheets are in 300TC bamboo viscose, in 8 colours: fitted sheet 120x200, flat sheet 190x290 and the three sets in the same size.
The ranking of three-quarter sheets
The fabrics are the same six as in the guide to the best double sheets, and the scores too, because the criteria don't change with the width of the bed. What changes is who sleeps in it: one person alone, often a student, a young man who has grown up and no longer fits in a single bed, or the guest who stays a few nights a year. The score runs from 1 to 10 and is the weighted average of the five criteria explained below, using the method common to all the buying guides..
| Rank | Fabric | Best for | Strength | Limit | Three-quarter price | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Looniva, 300TC bamboo viscose | those who sleep hot, in small rooms | silky hand, moisture well managed, 30 cm deep corners | wash at 30°C, no tumble dryer | €59 for the fitted sheet, €149 for the Mezzaluna set | 8,6 |
| 2 | Cotton percale | students, those who wash often and hot | sturdy, cool and matte | rougher, creases | n.d. | 8,0 |
| 3 | Cotton satin | those who want a glossy surface | smooth from the first touch | in summer it holds more heat | n.d. | 7,7 |
| 4 | Linen | ventilated rooms | airflow | rough in the first washes, creases a lot | n.d. | 7,0 |
| 5 | Egyptian cotton | those looking for long-staple cotton | soft, withstands hot washes | the price, and unclear labels | n.d. | 6,9 |
| 6 | Microfibre | the guest bed | price, dries quickly | retains little moisture | n.d. | 6,8 |
Looniva is our brand: this ranking is our judgement, with the criteria and weights set out below. For the other fabrics, as of 29 October 2026, we have no public survey of comparable prices in the three-quarter size, so we have written n/a rather than invent a price band.
In brief
- Looniva 300TC bamboo viscose sheets rank first in our ranking with 8.6 out of 10, ahead of cotton percale (8.0)
- For a 120x190 or 120x200 mattress you need the 120x200 fitted sheet and the 190x290 flat sheet; the duvet cover is 200x200
- Viscose holds about 13% of its own weight in moisture (ASTM D1909), cotton about 8.5%, polyester microfibre 0.4% (Journal of Natural Fibers, 2025)
- A bed 140 cm wide is a French bed: the 120 fitted sheet does not fit it
How we evaluated
Five criteria, a score from 1 to 10 for each, then the weighted sum. Comfort weighs the most because the sheet is the part of the bed your whole body touches. The pocket has its own weight: on a three-quarter bed the mattress is snug, and a sheet that slips off one corner ends up under your back within minutes.
| Criterion | Weight | What we look at |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | 25% | smoothness, softness, weight of the fabric on the skin |
| Cool and moisture | 20% | how much moisture the fibre holds without feeling wet to the touch |
| Pocket and fit | 15% | depth of the corners, elastic, available sizes |
| Durability and care | 20% | wash temperature, drying, ironing |
| Price | 20% | how much the three-quarter size costs |
The tally for our sheets: comfort 10, moisture 9, pocket 10, care 7, price 7. With the weights that makes 8.6. Care scores 7 because viscose must be washed at 30°C and laid flat, while percale handles 60°C and the tumble dryer: for a student living away from home with a shared washing machine, this point may matter more than all the rest. The price stays low because good cotton costs less. A high score means the fabric responds well to these five criteria; a bed with different needs may have a different winner.
What size is a three-quarter bed?
In Italy the three-quarter mattress is 120 cm wide, 190 cm long in older beds and 200 cm in almost all those bought in recent years. Everything else follows from that.
| Mattress | Fitted sheet | Flat sheet | Duvet cover | Bottom + top price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120x190 | 120x200 | 190x290 | 200x200 | €59 + €69 |
| 120x200 | 120x200 | 190x290 | 200x200 | €59 + €69 |
The 190x290 flat sheet looks generous for a 120 bed, and that is exactly what it needs: 35 cm of overhang on each side and enough length to tuck in at the foot. The pillowcases are the same 50x75 in every size; for the pillow size there is the guide on how to choose pillowcases.
The case that causes the most confusion is the 140 bed. Some people call it three-quarter, but it is a French bed. A 120 fitted sheet does not fit a 140 mattress, and we don't sell the 140. For that bed the 190x290 flat sheet and the 200x200 duvet cover still work; the fitted sheet has to be found in 140. The whole table, French bed included, is in the guide to three-quarter sheet sizes.
Which fitted sheet do you need?
The one as wide as the mattress, that is 120, and deep enough for its height. Length is forgiving: a 120x200 also fits a 120x190. Pocket depth is far less forgiving.
Let's run the numbers on a case we get asked about often: a child's bed with a 120x190 mattress, 18 cm high, with a 6 cm topper added when the child grows up. There are two formulas.
Extra length = length of the sheet minus length of the mattress. Here 200 minus 190 is 10 cm, that is 5 cm per end, which the elastic gathers underneath without creasing the top.
Height to cover = height of the mattress plus height of the topper. Here 18 plus 6 is 24 cm. Our pocket is 30 cm deep, with elastic all round, so there are 6 cm to spare that tuck under the mattress and hold the corner in place. If the total exceeds 30 cm, the pocket is not enough and we'll tell you now. Measure from the bed base to the highest point, in the middle of the mattress, where it is fullest. Redo the sums with your own numbers: tape measure, two additions, and you'll know whether the sheet holds. The case of very high mattresses is in the guide on sheets for a 30 cm high mattress.
One last thing about fitted sheets on a narrow bed. The three-quarter bed often stands against the wall, and the side facing the wall is the one you remake worst. A deep pocket with elastic all round goes back into place by itself, and saves you moving the bed every week.
Which fabric for someone who sleeps alone?
It depends on the room more than the person. Three-quarter beds almost always stand in small rooms, and a small room with one person in it all night heats up and fills with moisture sooner than a large room would.
Bamboo viscose is a man-made fibre of plant origin, made from cellulose (Treccani, viscose). It ranks first for two reasons: it is the smoothest of the group and holds about 13% of its own weight in moisture (ASTM D1909), against 8.5% for cotton. In a small room in summer that difference shows. In winter it feels cool on first contact for a few seconds, then takes on body temperature; anyone who can't stand that moment switches to flannel between November and February.
Percale is the cotton we recommend for those who wash often and hot, and it ranks second for this reason. Cotton satin is glossier and a little warmer. Linen lets through more air than any of them, but on the fitted sheet the roughness of the first washes is felt across the whole back; the comparison is in bamboo or linen. Microfibre is polyester, holds 0.4% moisture and costs little: for a guest bed used four nights a year it makes sense, for someone who sleeps in it all year much less so. All the fibres are compared in the guide which fabric to choose for sheets.
Sets or single pieces?
It depends on how many pieces you actually use. The Mezzaluna three-quarter set has a 120x200 fitted sheet, a 190x290 flat sheet and a pair of 50x75 pillowcases in the same colour, for €149. The same pieces bought one by one come to 59 + 69 + 39 = €167.
Anyone who sleeps under a duvet and doesn't use the flat sheet pays for a piece that stays in the wardrobe. In that case there is the Falce set, fitted sheet and pillowcases for €89, to pair with the 200x200 duvet cover. The Plenilunio set puts all four pieces together, duvet cover included, for €219. Single pieces remain the right choice if you want two different colours, or if you only need to replace the fitted sheet. The comparison between sets and pieces is in the guide to best bed sets.
How much do three-quarter sheets cost?
Ours cost €59 for the 120x200 fitted sheet and €69 for the 190x290 flat sheet; the pillowcases €39 a pair, the 200x200 duvet cover €89. The sets: Falce €89, Mezzaluna €149, Plenilunio €219. Shipping in Italy costs €5.90 and is free over €109: with the fitted sheet alone you pay it; with fitted and flat sheets together you reach €128 and don't pay it.
We don't give price bands for the other fabrics, because today we have no survey with a source and a date to cite. Bamboo costs more than a mid-range cotton. If the bed is for guests and you use it a few nights a year, spending less adds up.
Wash at 30°C, delicate cycle, liquid detergent, no bleach and no fabric softener, and dry flat. The fabric is certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 class I, issued to the spinner. The washing steps are in the guide on how to wash bamboo bedding.
Which to choose based on your bed
| If… | Choose | Because |
|---|---|---|
| you sleep alone in a small room and you get hot | bamboo viscose | holds moisture and stays smooth |
| you live away from home and wash at 60°C with the tumble dryer | cotton percale | handles high temperatures and the tumble dryer |
| the bed is against the wall | a fitted sheet with a deep pocket | the elastic all round holds it in place |
| it's the guest bed | microfibre | costs little and dries quickly |
| you sleep under a duvet, with no flat sheet on top | fitted sheet and pillowcases | you don't pay for a piece you don't use |
Frequently asked questions
Is a three-quarter bed 120 or 140?
The Italian three-quarter mattress is 120 cm wide. The 140 is the French bed, a middle ground between three-quarter and double, and needs a 140 cm wide fitted sheet. Before buying, measure the width edge to edge, without bedding on top.
How much do Looniva three-quarter sheets cost?
The Looniva 120x200 fitted sheet costs €59, the 190x290 flat sheet €69 and the Mezzaluna three-quarter set €149. Shipping in Italy is free over €109, and returns are possible within 30 days for unused items.
Can I use double sheets on a three-quarter bed?
A double flat sheet, yes: it hangs further over the sides, and you just tuck it in. A double fitted sheet, no: a 160 on a 120 mattress leaves 40 cm of fabric that bunches under the back and pulls off the corners. For the bottom sheet you always need the width of the mattress.
How often should you change the guest bed sheets?
After every guest, even if they only stayed one night. Between visits a made bed gathers dust: some people cover it with a bedspread and remake it with clean sheets the day before arrival. With two sets at home you can change them without waiting for the washing machine.
